Looking to banish those bare walls with a quick and affordable update? We have you covered. Whether it’s a dining room, living room or hallway wall in need of embellishment, painted plates are a quick and affordable way of adding character and making your house feel like a home. We share our step by step guide below to get you well on your way to creating a wow factor wall on a budget.
Step 1: Begin by painting your plates in your chosen colours. You can use a number of different colours together or sometimes colour blocking in one colour can look great too. Frog tape is the key to getting a crisp line, so ensure that the tape is pressed down with no visible bubbles. Paint on your colour and leave over night to ensure the paint has dried fully. Carefully remove the frog tape and leave plates in a safe place for hanging later.
Colours we used: Plates: Fleetwood coral cove, orange blossom, rose quartz and strawberry ice. Wall colour: Rue Chaptal.
Plates were purchased for €2.50 at Homestore. You can also use existing plates where possible or Ikea have affordable plates in the same price range.
Step 2: Next we chose to paint our focal wall in a very dark almost black. We love the way colour pops against dark backdrops, however you can choose any colour you like. Ensure the paint is dry before cutting out paper templates to stick to the wall. Once you are happy with the layout, mark where your plate hooks need to go and remove paper. We purchased both plate hangers and hooks from amazon here. Something to bear in mind when buying plate hangers is the size of your plates. Choose hangers accordingly! Once you have marked out hook positions, hammer hooks to your wall.
All that’s left to do now is hang your plates, put furniture back in place and there you have it, a focal wall that looks great and doesn’t cost the earth!
