Last week the House Edit crew headed off for some much needed r&r, we couldn’t escape the rain but we could certainly leave behind the daily hustle and bustle for one night. We were delighted to be invited to stay in the stunning Galgorm Resort & Spa, set in Ballymena, just 30 minutes from Belfast city and accessible in 2.5hours from Dublin via the M1, making for the perfect getaway!
Set within 163 acres of lush parkland with the spectacular River Maine flowing through the estate, guests experience pure relaxation in the Spa and Thermal Village with an extensive selection of riverside hot tubs, indoor and outdoor heated pools, steam rooms and saunas. The Resort also boasts a selection of restaurants and bars, as well as extensive conference and banqueting facilities.
We felt very at ease in a homely surrounding with the most welcoming and friendly staff, from the door men, to the receptionist and the porter, to all of the accommodating staff in the restaurant. We stayed in one of their stunning Deluxe Family rooms, which included a king, 2 single beds and 2 seating areas, plenty of space for a family/group without being on top of each other!
SPA & THERMAL VILLAGE:
Galgorm don’t just have a spa, they have a spa village, and its vast, one of the largest Thermal Spa’s in Europe, with a heavy focus on outdoor experiences with 11 outdoor private and shared hot tub experiences. Inside there are saunas, a sanarium, an orangery, a snow cabin, and indoor pools. They also offer a completely bespoke spa treatment menu available in one of 13 treatment rooms, along with the unique Boudoir designed for groups.
We had the Taster Facial to start, for £35 we enjoyed a 25min facial, which included a head or hand-arm massage. We thoroughly enjoyed the facials; both of us commented that it was the best facial we have experienced, feeling totally zen and skin feeling uber soft and glowy. This may have also been down to the products used which included Aromatherapy Associates and Voya beauty products.
Next, we enjoyed the Riverside Bathing Experience, a wood-fired, eco-friendly riverside tub all to ourselves for a 1hour dip for just £40/person (min. 2 sharing). The tubs are a quirky way to enjoy the picturesque location along the riverbank, somewhat surreal to be in a swimsuit outdoors in Ireland while it lashed rain, but this was somehow liberating with raindrops on our shoulders while we soaked in the gorgeous hot tub sipping champagne, making for a truly unique relaxation for both body and mind… we could get used to this!

With a spa treatment, hot tub experience and day of lounging scheduled we needed much fuel and of course we just love our food; luckily there are 5 dining options at the Galgorm, leaving us spoilt for choice.
For lunch we grabbed a bite in Gillies Bar & Grill, a lovely relaxed rustic bistro with high ceilings and artwork throughout – we thought the gorgeous animal artworks were possibly the work of Eoin O’Connor.
In the evening, we dined in the gorgeous Fratelli restaurant, which is situated in a quant building in the garden, here the decor has a real sense of the continent, giving you that holiday vibe. All of the walls are donned in beautiful art from Irish artist Graham Knuttel. We were in our element with Italian food at its best, beautiful tapas for starter with sea bass and pizza for mains.
Later, we moved to the conservatory for some cocktails and gin… sure why not when the Galgorm boasts a gin collection of over 400 varieties and all on display in a beautiful Gin Library, which also happens to house the most expensive Gin in the world, retailing at a mere £350 a shot… we only had a few!!
The Galgorm boasts other dining options too: The 3AA Rosette River Room Restaurant for formal dining, The Conservatory for Afternoon Tea, and The Halo Dome for very chilled dining.
The Halo Dome is a robed riverside restaurant within the Spa garden, overlooking the river. Constructed on two floors and opening out onto a large decking area for those seeking to eat al fresco, the restaurant creates the centrepiece of the resort’s spa complex; the guest attire in bathrobes makes for the perfect space to relax and feel at home. This spa eaterie is one of only 5 in the world, check out the 5 amazing spaces here: http://www.halodome.net/
All in all our stay made for the perfect mini Spa Break, besides the drizzly weather we were hugely impressed with the entire experience, from the friendly staff, to the delicious food and ultimately to the simply AMAZING Spa & Thermal Village. We left feeling zen and wanting more, the only thing we would change is extending our stay next time. It’s definitely worth a visit, we are already checking dates to bring our significant others.
The Galgorm Resort and Spa makes for the perfect experience to catch up with a friend, steal a romantic getaway or enjoy that ultimate family break!
We’ll be back!
